Eddie's Solo Show

October 20, 2004

Last night I played a solo show at Eddie's Attic for the first time in several years. It was not completely solo since Michael Levine and I were onstage swapping songs.  Michael was tremendous with his intricate looping work. I felt like my timing was off somehow and I was never quite able to reach the audience the way I would like to have.

Performing is really such a strange thing.  You can know your songs, know your arrangements, even know your between songs patter and still miss the mark.  There is critical component in every great performance that is much harder to come by.  It's an intangible ingredient but it makes all of the difference. It's a kind of surrender -- a wreckless willingness to be vulnerable and stretch yourself. It's a place you cannot reach with your brain, but must come from your heart. I think too damned much!

On a lighter note, as always at Eddie's Attic, I met some wonderful musicians I have never come across before.  The Weepies shared the night with us as a result of a booking mishap, but it was a happy mistake.  Deb and Steve are brillant songwriters and their harmonies are stunning. I really enjoyed watching their set. I took this picture last night during their set.

The Weepies

All in all, the night was a success. It was great to see some old friends and new faces. Catherine, my sweety actually went to the trouble to put up posters around town for me in the midst of her hectic days and I think that little bit of promotion really helped.
