The Nature of Struggle
October 2, 2004Life is in no uncertain terms a struggle. We fight for whatever peace we earn, and whatever dreams we bring to fruition in the course of our lives are hard-won. I'm not sure about much, the older I get but this is, in my experience, the truth. With every passing year, I realize how little I really know. The certainty I had as a kid is all but gone.
This morning we woke up early and I took Dylan for a walk around the lake in our neighborhood park. Fall is coming, the air is cooler and there was a mist coming off of the water. The grass was heavy with dew as we reached down and selected "swords" for our journey into the woods. What a gift a child is. Dylan lives so completely inside every moment. For a couple of hours this morning I could forget myself and all the heavy shit I carry around on a regular basis and be an explorer.
I took the picture below just before we set out into the woods. I love the image because it captures that unshakeable certainty and strength that we all start out with. He is the picture of balance, purity and strength. He is ready to take on the world. He is my teacher.
